Lauren Baguley, Class of 2010
My name is Midshipman First Class Lauren Baguley. I attend the United States Naval Academy and will be a senior in the 2013-2014 academic year. I am an Oceanography major, have been on the dean’s list four semesters in a row, and will graduate in May 2014 with a commission as
an ensign in the United States Navy where I will become a Navy Meteorology / Oceanography officer. I am a member of the Women’s Varsity Swim Team (a Division I level Program), am a varsity record holder in the 200 yard backstroke, and I have been selected to represent the program as the next team Captain.
I began swimming 15 years ago in the Hudsonville High School Pool. I also played water polo from 6th-12th grade before continuing on to college. To say that swimming is a large part of my personal and professional life would be a gross understatement. Swimming in the Hudsonville Aquatics programs instilled in me the drive and determination to get me to where I am today. I chose my area of study in college because of my love for the water. I have spent my academic career at the United States Naval Academy devoted to learning about the environment I have spent nearly my whole life in, and my major choice led me to my career path in the Navy.
The relationships I made with my coaches and teammates while competing at Hudsonville have been some of the most significant and lasting associations in my life. I still keep in contact with prior teammates and practice with the team when I am home for my short breaks throughout the year. Whenever I return, I know I will be welcomed and given a place to practice, just like I was every day before I left.
Learning to swim in the environment that Hudsonville provided fostered my passion for the water while teaching me valuable lessons for the future. The many hours I spent in the pool gave me an incredible aptitude for the patience, discipline, and focus necessary life in the military.
I credit my ability to succeed at the academy to the values I learned while being a member of Hudsonville Aquatics teams. Focus, mental stamina, and further developing my innate competitive edge while teaching me to be a teammate, friend, and leader are a few of the invaluable skills taught to me through the Hudsonville Aquatics program. I am proud to have been a member, and I am excited to see how the program develops in the
future.
Sincerely,
Lauren Baguley
